Analysts at the Institute of Military Studies (ISW) believe that the Ukrainian armed forces will continue to fight for Bakhmut to deplete the elite units of the Wagner PMC.
Experts note that the battle for Bakhmut has become strategically important for Ukraine, as Russian forces are located in the area.
Some Western media have suggested that Ukraine is using elite troops and scarce equipment mainly to fight the "cannon fodder" of Wagner PMC recruits.
ISW analysts agree with this observation, but note that the Russian side has a limited number of combat-ready prisoners, and that killing tens of thousands of them in Bakhmut will result in their not being used in more important combat operations.
It is also noted that Russian forces have recently engaged higher-quality special units and elements of regular forces in combat operations, indicating a change in tactics.
ISW analysts call for a diplomatic solution to the conflict and a compromise between all parties involved.
